Film Industry Symposium - 22 November

The Bournemouth Screen Academy is hosting an Film Industry Symposium on Wednesday 22 November to enable students to develop their understanding and awareness of the commercial side of the film industry. 

Speakers are Iain Farmer (independent distributor), Nick Lom (film lawyer), Julian Friedmann (Blake Friedmann Agency), and Nik Powell (producer).  Screen Academy students will shortly be allocated tickets to attend the day, which promises to be both interesting and informative. 

This innovative event will take place on Wednesday November 22nd from 9.30 – 5.00 and will be based in the Allsebrook lecture theatre on the Bournemouth University Talbot campus.  Due to limited seating, live streaming of the event into additional rooms within the Arts Institute and Bournemouth University is planned to ensure that nobody misses out.

Tuesday November 21st - Lees Lecture Theatre, University Campus

 5.30-7.30pm      Introduced Screening: “The Crying Game” (1992)

A preparation screening for the presentation on the following afternoon by the film’s producer Nik Powell.

 

Wednesday November 22nd - Allsebrook Lecture Theatre, University Campus

Iain is a film distributor; his activities involve buying and selling films, negotiating rights and raising funding for film productions.

Julian Friedmann

Julian is a literary and screenwriting agent, a partner in the Blake-Friedmann agency, highly respected speaker on the screen industry and author of “How To Make Money Scriptwriting”.

Nick Lom

Originally a partner in the firm Schilling and Lom, Nick specialises in contractual and other legal aspects of film production.  He now has a similar role with Simons Muirhead & Burton.

Nik Powell

Nik set up Virgin Records with Richard Branson, and in 1982 formed Palace Productions with Stephen Woolley.  From that point he began a hugely successful career in film, producing The Company of Wolves in 1984 and following this with more than thirty productions including Absolute Beginners, Mona Lisa, Scandal, Backbeat and more recently Fever Pitch, Little Voice, Fanny and Elvis and Ladies in Lavender.  Amongst his achievements is the Oscar-winning The Crying Game (1992).  Based on last night’s screening of The Crying Game (see above), Nik will be talking about the process of script to screen on this classic movie.

The event is free to attend but will be ticketed, with priority given to Screen Academy students.  Tickets will shortly be allocated to students across the range of Screen Academy courses.
