Summer Schools

Bournemouth generally and the BMS and AIB in particular has an established reputation for running summer-time education courses. The Skillset Screen Academy Summer School will be an annual residential event, and in summer 2006 the Academy welcomed thirty Year 10 students drawn from the immediate Academy area.

Script development is recognised as a key factor in producing top-quality, award-winning films, so the Screen Academy Summer School 2006 was script- and production-led, by intensively developing scripts right through to final shooting standards.

Year 10 students (the pre-GCSE year) wrote and developed scripts in small groups under the guidance of the Academy’s screenwriting students.  They learnt to take an idea, discuss and develop it, and to craft a script with characters, narrative and location in mind, rewriting and polishing it based on individual and group decisions.  As they crafted the work towards their final shooting scripts, they learnt to make production decisions, discussing budgeting, legal rights, location selection, etc.  Then the scripts were taken forward to the Summer School, when the students shot their films, learning the skills of directing, sound, camera, lighting and editing, again under the guidance of the Academy’s undergraduates with supervision by Academy tutors.  Professional actors were cast and the young students themselves directed.

Student filming

The participants lived on the Academy campus throughout two-week Summer School, with all costs met by the Academy. The finished films premiered in a showcase event on the last evening of the Summer School.

For another opportunity to see the short films produced on the Summer School, please take a look at the News items. All films made over the two weeks will be screened as part of the Purbeck Film Festival on Saturday 28th October.

For Summer School 2007, the Bournemouth Screen Academy is broadening its horizons. Watch out for updates!
